SUMMARY:ARTolerance Celebrates International Women's Day
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, March 8th Join us as we celebrate International Women’s Day with a performance featuring Tammy Scheffer (American/Israeli vocalist)\, Shinjoo Cho (Bandoneon)\, Hyun Jin Cha (Korean Drum) and Udi Bar-David (Cello). This celebration will start at 2:30pm at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Glenside and continue with a second performance at Chester County Historical Society at 7:30pm\,  a space that was used for a variety of public events\, including the first women’s rights convention in Pennsylvania. The second performance will open with an appearance by guest Author/Storyteller Susannah Brody followed by a music-filled program by the ARTolerance ensemble. Catch one or both performances and join us in honoring and celebrating the social\, economic\, cultural and political achievements of women. \nEvent sponsors include: St Paul’s Lutheran Church\, Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia\, Kehillahs\nof Buxmont and Chester County\, Chester County Historical Society. \nTammy Scheffer\, American/Israeli vocalist \nBorn in Belgium\, raised in Israel and currently residing in Brooklyn\, Vocalist and composer Tammy\nScheffer’s music combines influences of contemporary jazz with her own expressive voice and a strong\nsense of melody. Growing up in a musical family\, Tammy was first introduced to jazz music in high\nschool\, and started performing professionally at the age of 18. Influenced and encouraged by the\ninstrumentalists she worked with\, Tammy absorbed their approach to improvisation and composition\nand embraced the freedom of instrumental jazz. Later she attended Rimon School of Jazz\, and was\ncaptivated by the contemporary jazz sound for the first time. Inspired to search for her own personal\nvoice\, Tammy decided to move to the United States and look for new musical challenges. After being\noffered scholarships from the New School of Music\, Berklee College of Music and the New England\nConservatory\, Tammy chose to attend the latter\, where she studied with Jerry Bergonzi\, Jerry Leake and\nDominique Eade. She recently graduated with honors\, and moved to Brooklyn\, NY\, where she teaches in\nher private studio and work towards a debut cd. \nSince arriving to Boston in 2007 Tammy took part in various projects\, performing at venues all over the\nUnited States. In 2008 she toured with Ayelet Rose Gotlieb’s project Mayim Rabim\, and performed at PS\n122 and Drom Club in NY\, Chicago Cultural Center\, Alevrno College in Milwaukee\, Wisconsin and other\npremier venues. In March 2008 she has been chosen to participate in the exclusive Betty Carter’s Jazz\nAhead workshop\, a program that took place in Washington DC and Philadelphia\, and included three\nconcerts on the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage which were broadcasted live over the internet. Other\nnotable performances include the Virginia Arts Festival\, the Regattabar in Boston\, the Fat Cat in NY and\nthe Tel Aviv Jazz Festival in Israel. \nRecently Tammy participated in Michael Feinberg’s latest album\, “Evil Genius”\, and in saxophonist Brian\nHogans’ album\, to be released by Turnaround Records. In recent years she worked with an expanding\ncircle of musicians\, including Jeff Berlin\, Kevin Mahogany\, Aaron Goldberg\, Anat Fort\, Sam Barsh\, Luques\nCurtis and Obed Calvaire. Tammy is a recipient of a scholarship from the America-Israel Cultural\nFoundation. \nShinjoo Cho\, Bandoneon \nBandoneonist\, pianist\, and accordionist Shinjoo began her piano study in Korea at the age of five. After attending Westminster Choir College in Princeton\, NJ\, her path to the music of other cultures began with studies in Serbia and Argentina. Shinjoo has collaborated with international music\, dance\, and film artists in multi-disciplinary projects as an improviser and an ensemble musician\, with performances in the US\, Canada\, Korea\, Guatemala\, and Argentina. \nIn 2012 and 2016\, she participated in the Marlboro Music Festival under the baton of Leon Fleisher and appeared as a guest soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra. During her 2014-2016 residency in Argentina\, Shinjoo’s notable appearances include solo piano performance for the President of Argentina\, Teatro Colón debut with Branford Marsalis Quartet during the Buenos Aires Jazz Festival\, and Música Maestra ensemble by Diego Schissi at Centro Cultural Kirchner Symphonic Hall. \nShe’s currently director of Oscuro Quintet and a member of Transonic Orchestra\, Tinta Roja duo\, La Abandone duo\, and Aces of Rhythm sextet in NY. \nHyun Jin Cha\, Korean Drums  \nHyun Jin Cha is a traditional Korean percussionist and educator. Her music career began in 1998 with Dulsori\, a performance ensemble known for playing a role of a global ambassador of Korean music. Hyun Jin performed in festivals such as ZOMER (Belgium)\, WOMAD (Australia\, Singapore & UK)\, International Drum Festival (Venezuela)\, globalFEST (US)\, and WOMEX (Denmark) and collaborated with international music and dance artists in multi-disciplinary performances\, residencies\, and workshops as an ensemble musician\, teacher\, and director. \nHyun Jin relocated to the US in 2017 and is currently based in Philadelphia\, playing an active role in igniting the interest in Korean music as a performer and educator. She has lectured and performed at University of Delaware\, University of Pennsylvania\, Penn State University\, Westchester University\, and Site/Sound Festival. \nUdi Bar-David\, Founder of ARTolerance\, Cello \nPhoto by Chris Lee \nUdi Bar-David is widely considered one of the most versatile cellists in the world\, performing on international stages with both classical and ethnic musicians. Udi studied in Tel-Aviv\, with Leonard Rose at the Juilliard School\, and Orchestral Conducting at Curtis Institute of Music. \nUdi won the International Villa Lobos Competition in Brazil\, and appeared as a soloist with numerous orchestras\, including the Jerusalem Symphony and Philly Pops. He was featured on the TODAY show\, and was represented by Astral Artistic Services and the Center for Jewish Culture and Creativity. He has served as principal cellist with many orchestras\, and has been a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra since the late 1980s. \nAs a chamber musician\, Udi has collaborated with Christoph Eschenbach\, Leon Fleisher\, Jaime Laredo\, Rudolph Buchbinder\, Emanuel Ax and others. As Founder and Artistic Director of Intercultural Journeys\, he produced numerous events world-wide. Udi has recently created Artolerance – an important new effort to expand the crucial role music and the arts play in fostering understanding and tolerance. Udi has toured the US\, Europe\, Palestine\, Israel\, Cuba and Asia\, with world-renowned artists\, including Jie Bing Chen\, Nawang Khechog\, Hanna Khoury\, Wu Man\, Diane Monroe\, R. Carlos Nakai\, Mandy Patinkin\, and Simon Shaheen.
