SUMMARY:ARTolerance Returns to Esperanza: From Asia to Latin America
DESCRIPTION:ARTolerance will feature Korean percussion and bandoneon virtuosos sharing the stage with a cherished Argentinian vocalist and versatile Israeli cellist. \nThis ensemble of international artists will transcend boundaries\, present transformative music from Asia & Latin America\, and introduce surprise musical guests from the community. \nARTolerance Ensemble: \nShinjoo-Cho\, bandoneon\nUdi Bar-David\, cello\nHyun Jin Cha\, percussion\nSofia Tosello\, vocals \nARTIST:  \n\n\n\n\nShinjoo-Cho\, Bandoneon \nBandoneonist\, pianist\, and accordionist Shinjoo began her piano study in Korea at the age of five. After attending Westminster Choir College in Princeton\, NJ\, her path to the music of other cultures began with studies in Serbia and Argentina. Shinjoo has collaborated with international music\, dance\, and film artists in multi-disciplinary projects as an improviser and an ensemble musician\, with performances in the US\, Canada\, Korea\, Guatemala\, and Argentina. \nIn 2012 and 2016\, she participated in the Marlboro Music Festival under the baton of Leon Fleisher and appeared as a guest soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra. During her 2014-2016 residency in\nArgentina\, Shinjoo’s notable appearances include solo piano performance for the President of Argentina\, Teatro Colón debut with Branford Marsalis Quartet during the Buenos Aires Jazz Festival\, and Música Maestra ensemble by Diego Schissi at Centro Cultural Kirchner Symphonic Hall. \nShe’s currently director of Oscuro Quintet and a member of Transonic Orchestra\, Tinta Roja duo\, La Abandone duo\, and Aces of Rhythm sextet in NY. \nUdi Bar-David\, Cello \nUdi Bar-David is widely considered one of the most versatile cellists in the world\, performing on international stages with both classical and ethnic musicians. Udi studied in Tel-Aviv\, with Leonard Rose at the Juilliard School\, and Orchestral Conducting at Curtis Institute of Music. \nUdi won the International Villa Lobos Competition in Brazil\, and appeared as a soloist with numerous orchestras\, including the Jerusalem Symphony and Philly Pops. He was featured on the TODAY show\, and was represented by Astral Artistic Services and the Center for Jewish Culture and Creativity. He has served as principal cellist with many orchestras\, and has been a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra since the late 1980s. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs a chamber musician\, Udi has collaborated with Christoph Eschenbach\, Leon Fleisher\, Jaime Laredo\, Rudolph Buchbinder\, Emanuel Ax and others. As Founder and Artistic Director of Intercultural Journeys\, he produced numerous events world-wide. Udi has recently created Artolerance – an important new effort to expand the crucial role music and the arts play in fostering understanding and tolerance. \nUdi has toured the US\, Europe\, Palestine\, Israel\, Cuba and Asia\, with world-renowned artists\, including Jie Bing Chen\, Nawang Khechog\, Hanna Khoury\, Wu Man\, Diane Monroe\, R. Carlos Nakai\, Mandy Patinkin\, and Simon Shaheen. \nHyun Jin Cha\, Percussion \nHyun Jin Cha is a traditional Korean percussionist and educator. Her music career began in 1998 with Dulsori\, a performance ensemble known for playing a role of a global ambassador of Korean music. Hyun Jin performed in festivals such as ZOMER (Belgium)\, WOMAD (Australia\, Singapore & UK)\, International Drum Festival (Venezuela)\, globalFEST (US)\, and WOMEX (Denmark) and collaborated with international music and dance artists in multi-disciplinary performances\, residencies\, and workshops as an ensemble musician\, teacher\, and director. \nHyun Jin relocated to the US in 2017 and is currently based in Philadelphia\, playing an active role in igniting the interest in Korean music as a performer and educator. She has lectured and performed at University of Delaware\, University of Pennsylvania\, Penn State University\, Westchester University\, and Site/Sound Festival. \nSofia Tosello\, Vocals \nOriginally from Córdoba\, Argentina\, Vocalist and Music Educator Sofia Tosello is a cherished voice in the vibrant scene of New York City artists who are redefining Latin American song. Christopher Loundon\, writing in Jazz Times\, notes they “ The next wave in Latin –American jazz may well begin\nwith Tosello”. \nAmong the singers and musicians she has performed and recorded with Thalia\, Pedro Giraudo Jazz Orchestra and Tango Ensemble\, Guy Mendilow Ensemble\, Mariela Franganillo Dance Company\, Polly Ferman and Glamour Tango and many others. In 2011 and 2012 Sofia has taught in one of the most renowned Music Schools in Chennai India\, Swarnaboohmi Academy of Music. In 2016 she was the Vocal Teacher at Tango for Musicians and Composers at Reed College.
