DESCRIPTION:ARTolerance performers will present a musical tribute during Medieval Academy of America reception at Philadelphia Museum of ART on Saturday\, March 9 at 7pm. \n\n\n\n\nOnline Registration closes February 1st\nOn-Site Registration at the registration desk in the Faculty Lounge (Rm 135) on the 1st floor of Fisher-Bennet Hall\, 3340 Walnut Street.\n$50 late registration \n\nPhyllis Chapell\, voice\, guitar\nHafez Kotain\, percussion \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPHYLLIS CHAPELL Phyllis Chapell—vocalist/guitarist—hailing from Philadelphia\, PA\, has spent her life developing a universal musical style\, singing “world songs”. She performs a unique mix of jazz\, originals\, folk\, pop and international music\, including songs in up to 13 languages from the U.S.\, Brazil\, Latin America\, Europe\, Africa\, and the Middle East. Phyllis Chapell has performed in concert throughout the U.S.\, Brazil\, Latin America\, and Europe. She has released multiple CDs\, as a solo artist\, and with her internationally known world jazz ensemble\, Phyllis Chapell & SIORA. She also performs with the Ken Ulansey Ensemble\, the Hot Club of Philadelphia\, and many other musicians/ensembles throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region. She also has produced multiple videos\, which you can see and listen to at www.phyllischapell.com. Phyllis Chapell has been named as one of the top 500 jazz vocalists of all time by Scott Yanow (Down Beat\, Jazz Times and AllMusicGuide). She has also won song competitions for her original music; and was chosen to be one of IndieMusic’s Top 25. \n\n  \n\n \nHafez Kotain is the Percussion Director at Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture\, Keystone State Boychoir and The Arab Percussion Ensemble at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a master percussionist fluent in both Arab and Latin rhythms–a fluency he honed in his native countries of Venezuela and Syria. In 2013 he received a Pew Fellowship in the Arts\, a prestigious award given to Philadelphia artists of exemplary talent. He began playing the doumbek at the age of seven years\, made his first stage performance at nine years\, winning the national percussion competitions in Syria for five consecutive years. Kotain first began his career as an educator\, teaching a variety of percussion styles to dedicated students\, musicians and music teachers. In 2010 and 2011\, Kotain taught at the Arab Music Retreat led by the internationally acclaimed Arab music performer\, Simon Shaheen. He has performed with Lebanese composer\, singer\, and oud master Marcel Khalife and Al Mayadine Ensemble in their latest US and Canada tour for “Fall of the Moon: An Homage to the Poet Mahmoud Darwish.” Kotain has also toured with singer George Wassouf in Canada and the US\, and has performed with acclaimed artist Sting\, the Philadelphia Orchestra\, Artolerance\, Arabesque Music Ensemble\, composer Kareem Roustom and with actor and tenor Mandy Patinkin. \n  \nThe 94th Annual Meeting of the Medieval Academy of America will take place in Philadelphia on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. The meeting is jointly hosted by the Medieval Academy of America\, Bryn Mawr College\, Delaware Valley Medieval Association\, Haverford College\, St. Joseph’s University\, the University of Pennsylvania\, and Villanova University. This year’s meeting spotlights the “global turn” in medieval studies\, treating the Middle Ages as a broad historical and cultural phenomenon that encompasses the full extent of Europe as well as the Middle East\, southern and eastern Asia\, Africa\, and the Americas. The program will feature three plenary addresses and seventy concurrent sessions\, representing a range of threads\, including “Expanding Geographies of the Middle Ages\,” “Approaches to Historiography\,” “Interfaith Encounters: Real and Imagined\,” “Gender Matters\,” “Intersections Across Disciplines and Borders\,” Digitizing the Global Middle Ages\,” “Transmission and Technologies of Knowledge\,” and cover topics addressing the natural world\, the arts\, material culture\, literary studies\, legal traditions\, race and ethnicity in the global Middle Ages\, to name a few. Roundtables\, hands-on workshops\, and lightning talks will highlight concepts and practices in K-12 education\, diversity and race in the medieval studies\, pedagogy and research in global medieval contexts\, and practices and ethics of digital scholarship.

The day will include an interfaith poetry component led by students\, instrumental instructions with Esperanza high school students\, rehearsals for students participation in our public culminating performance that evening open to the students\, their families and public. ARTolerance Dialogue in Three Movements will serve as the platform for the day\, with the theme of Latin & Middle Eastern cultural connection. \n\n\n\nUdi Bar-David\, Cellist\nHafez Kotain\, Percussionist\nKeila Pérez-Vega- Dancer\nCynthia Samaha\, Vocalist  \n\n\n\nTickets will be $10\, Free Admission for children and students.\nTickets will go live early March \nUdi Bar-David\, Cellist\nUdi Bar-David is widely considered one of the most versatile cellists in the world\, performing on international stages with both classical and ethnic musicians. Udi studied in Tel-Aviv\, with Leonard Rose at the Juilliard School\, and Orchestral Conducting at Curtis Institute of Music. Udi won the International Villa Lobos Competition in Brazil\, and appeared as a soloist with numerous orchestras\, including the Jerusalem Symphony and Philly Pops. He was featured on the TODAY show\, and was represented by Astral Artistic Services and the Center for Jewish Culture and Creativity. He has served as principal cellist with many orchestras\, and has been a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra since the late 1980s. As a chamber musician\, Udi has collaborated with Christoph Eschenbach\, Leon Fleisher\, Jaime Laredo\, Rudolph Buchbinder\, Emanuel Ax and others. As Founder and Artistic Director of Intercultural Journeys\, he produced numerous events world-wide. Udi has recently created Artolerance – an important new effort to expand the crucial role music and the arts play in fostering understanding and tolerance. Udi has toured the US\, Europe\, Palestine\, Israel\, Cuba and Asia\, with world-renowned artists\, including Jie Bing Chen\, Nawang Khechog\, Hanna Khoury\, Wu Man\, Diane Monroe\, R. In 2012\, Keila became a principal dancer at Eleone Dance Theatre where she remained for 3 years. Post-graduation\, Keila settled in Philadelphia\, worked as a freelance artist and was a part of Dance Iquail in its 2015 season. Thereafter\, Keila has worked with numerous local artists in dance and photography including: Ani/Malayaworks (PHL)\, 10HL Projects (NYC)\, Melissa Rector & dancers (PHL) among others. Keila is a performing dance artist with Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers\, Marketing/Events Director at Koresh Dance Company\, and coordinator with ARTolerance. Keila is the proud founder of Artsi\, a Philadelphia-based non-profit organization that creates spaces for new and diverse audiences to experience art in innovative ways. \n\nCynthia Samaha\nCynthia Samaha obtained her diploma from the Lebanese National Higher Conservatory of Music. She has appeared as a soloist with the Lebanese National Symphony Orchestra in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony\, Mozart’s Coronation Mass\, Rossini’s Moses\, Mozart’s Requiem\, Vivaldi’s Gloria\, and Mozart’s Mass KV259\, under the baton of Dr. Walid Gholmieh. She appeared as a soloist in Mozart’s opera Bastien und Bastienne sung in Lebanese dialect produced by the Lebanese National Higher Conservatory of Music\, as well as Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater and a Verdi Gala under the baton of Maestro Harout Fazlian. She also appeared at the American University of Beirut\, as a soloist in Mendelssohn’s lobgesang\, conducted by Maestro Paul Meers. \nCynthia has performed in Al-Ain Festival at the United Arab Emirates as Donna Anna in Mozart’s Don Giovanni\, and as the Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Zbigniew Graca. She appeared as Rosina in a Lebanese-Italian production of Il Barbiere di Siviglia Rossini\, conducted by Fr. Toufic Maatouk. Other performances include concerts in the UAE accompanied by the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra\, Jordan with the Jordanian National Orchestra\, in Washington DC\, and in New York in an all-Mozart program at the Lincoln Center.\n \nCynthia Samaha

ARTolerance will be featuring the award winning Arab & Jewish ensemble SheshBesh\, under the auspices of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra\, joined by cellist Udi Bar-David. The program will also recognize ARTolerance’s sponsors and upcoming initiatives of exciting and diverse programming in our region. Performance will begin at 3pm and guests are then invited to join a Meet & Mingle reception with the performing artists. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n3pm performance followed by a Meet & Mingle Reception\nSuggested Donation $20 at the door \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSheshBesh \n‘SheshBesh” a musical ensemble\, was founded by Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in 1999 as one of the first activities of the education department. This excellent ensemble brings together Jewish and Arab muscians in a unique example of tolerant\, understanding and communication. They appear regularly in the framework of education\, but have also appeared for adult audiences under Music Director\, Zubin Mehta.
