Refreshments to follow. \nAbout Dr. Arnold Porges: \nBorn to Dr. Nandor and Pauline Porges in 1932\, he graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine where he was elected to the OKU  National Dental Honor Society. He served as a Second Lieutenant and chemical engineer in the U.S. Air Force\, and was a member of the Teamsters. For over five decades\, he had a private dental practice in Wynnewood and served as a Professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine\, from which he also received the 2007 Alumni Award of Merit for his leadership in the dental profession. He peacefully passed away in 2020 at the age 88.

The second performance will open with an appearance by guest Author/Storyteller Susannah Brody followed by a music-filled program by the ARTolerance ensemble. Catch one or both performances and join us in honoring and celebrating the social\, economic\, cultural and political achievements of women. \nEvent sponsors include: St Paul’s Lutheran Church\, Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia\, Kehillahs of Buxmont and Chester County\, Chester County Historical Society. \nTammy Scheffer\, American/Israeli vocalist \nBorn in Belgium\, raised in Israel and currently residing in Brooklyn\, Vocalist and composer Tammy Scheffer’s music combines influences of contemporary jazz with her own expressive voice and a strong sense of melody. Growing up in a musical family\, Tammy was first introduced to jazz music in high school\, and started performing professionally at the age of 18. Influenced and encouraged by the instrumentalists she worked with\, Tammy absorbed their approach to improvisation and composition and embraced the freedom of instrumental jazz. Later she attended Rimon School of Jazz\, and was captivated by the contemporary jazz sound for the first time. Inspired to search for her own personal voice\, Tammy decided to move to the United States and look for new musical challenges. After being offered scholarships from the New School of Music\, Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory\, Tammy chose to attend the latter\, where she studied with Jerry Bergonzi\, Jerry Leake and Dominique Eade. She recently graduated with honors\, and moved to Brooklyn\, NY\, where she teaches in her private studio and work towards a debut cd. \nSince arriving to Boston in 2007 Tammy took part in various projects\, performing at venues all over the United States. In 2008 she toured with Ayelet Rose Gotlieb’s project Mayim Rabim\, and performed at PS 122 and Drom Club in NY\, Chicago Cultural Center\, Alevrno College in Milwaukee\, Wisconsin and other premier venues. In March 2008 she has been chosen to participate in the exclusive Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead workshop\, a program that took place in Washington DC and Philadelphia\, and included three concerts on the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage which were broadcasted live over the internet. Other notable performances include the Virginia Arts Festival\, the Regattabar in Boston\, the Fat Cat in NY and the Tel Aviv Jazz Festival in Israel. \nRecently Tammy participated in Michael Feinberg’s latest album\, “Evil Genius”\, and in saxophonist Brian Hogans’ album\, to be released by Turnaround Records. In recent years she worked with an expanding circle of musicians\, including Jeff Berlin\, Kevin Mahogany\, Aaron Goldberg\, Anat Fort\, Sam Barsh\, Luques Curtis and Obed Calvaire. During her 2014-2016 residency in Argentina\, Shinjoo’s notable appearances include solo piano performance for the President of Argentina\, Teatro Colón debut with Branford Marsalis Quartet during the Buenos Aires Jazz Festival\, and Música Maestra ensemble by Diego Schissi at Centro Cultural Kirchner Symphonic Hall. \nShe’s currently director of Oscuro Quintet and a member of Transonic Orchestra\, Tinta Roja duo\, La Abandone duo\, and Aces of Rhythm sextet in NY. \nHyun Jin Cha\, Korean Drums  \nHyun Jin Cha is a traditional Korean percussionist and educator. Her music career began in 1998 with Dulsori\, a performance ensemble known for playing a role of a global ambassador of Korean music. Hyun Jin performed in festivals such as ZOMER (Belgium)\, WOMAD (Australia\, Singapore & UK)\, International Drum Festival (Venezuela)\, globalFEST (US)\, and WOMEX (Denmark) and collaborated with international music and dance artists in multi-disciplinary performances\, residencies\, and workshops as an ensemble musician\, teacher\, and director. \nHyun Jin relocated to the US in 2017 and is currently based in Philadelphia\, playing an active role in igniting the interest in Korean music as a performer and educator. She has lectured and performed at University of Delaware\, University of Pennsylvania\, Penn State University\, Westchester University\, and Site/Sound Festival. \nUdi Bar-David\, Founder of ARTolerance\, Cello \nPhoto by Chris Lee \nUdi Bar-David is widely considered one of the most versatile cellists in the world\, performing on international stages with both classical and ethnic musicians. Udi studied in Tel-Aviv\, with Leonard Rose at the Juilliard School\, and Orchestral Conducting at Curtis Institute of Music. \nUdi won the International Villa Lobos Competition in Brazil\, and appeared as a soloist with numerous orchestras\, including the Jerusalem Symphony and Philly Pops. He was featured on the TODAY show\, and was represented by Astral Artistic Services and the Center for Jewish Culture and Creativity. He has served as principal cellist with many orchestras\, and has been a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra since the late 1980s. \nAs a chamber musician\, Udi has collaborated with Christoph Eschenbach\, Leon Fleisher\, Jaime Laredo\, Rudolph Buchbinder\, Emanuel Ax and others. As Founder and Artistic Director of Intercultural Journeys\, he produced numerous events world-wide. Udi has recently created Artolerance – an important new effort to expand the crucial role music and the arts play in fostering understanding and tolerance. She has appeared extensively in recitals and concerts and has performed as soloist with the Houston Symphony\, Symphony in C (formerly the Haddonfield Symphony)\, and the Independence Sinfonia of Pennsylvania\, among others. She has collaborated in chamber music performances with Roberto Díaz\, Marcy Rosen\, and Jonathan Biss; she has also performed with the Dolce Suono Ensemble and appeared as a guest artist with Astral Artists. During her time at the Curtis Institute of Music\, Ms. Li was part of Curtis on Tour’s first tour to Asia\, which included chamber music performances and master classes in Shanghai\, Beijing\, and Seoul. An avid orchestral player\, she has been a member of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and Symphony in C. She has also played with the Boston Symphony at Tanglewood. \nMs. Li has spent summers at Taos\, Tanglewood\, Encore\, and Meadowmount. For the past three summers she has been part of the orchestra and chamber music series at the Artosphere Festival in Arkansas. She was a two-time scholarship recipient of the Dorothy Richard Starling Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. She has also appeared on NPR’s From the Top and Houston Public Radio’s In the Front Row. Her performance of Prokofiev’s First Violin Concerto with the Houston Symphony was broadcast on KUHF\, Houston Public Radio. \nMs. Li began her formal violin lessons at the age of seven in Beijing with Shengyin Huang at the Central Conservatory. After moving to Houston in 2000 she studied with Bingsun Yang and later with Kenneth Goldsmith. Ms. Li holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis Institute\, where she studied with Pamela Frank\, Arnold Steinhardt\, and Shmuel Ashkenasi. Prior to 1995 he served as associate principal viola of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra. \nBorn in New York\, Mr. Nicastro grew up in the Hague\, Netherlands\, where he began violin studies at the age of six. Returning to the United States\, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature and a Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance from Boston University while studying with Yuri Mazurkevich. Continuing his musical studies\, Mr. Nicastro received a University Fellowship and an Artist Diploma from Indiana University\, where he studied viola with Abraham Skernick\, Atar Arad\, and former Philadelphia Orchestra Principal Viola Joseph dePasquale. \nPhoto: Jessica Griffin \n\n\n\n  \nChristine Lim: \nChristine Lim began violin studies at the age of three. In 2018 she received her bachelor’s degree from the Curtis Institute of Music\, where she studied with Ida Kavafian. Ms. Lim has performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras\, including the Munich Chamber Orchestra\, the Suwon Philharmonic\, the Gwacheon Philharmonic\, the Rzeszów Philharmonic\, the KBS Symphony\, the Euro-Asia Philharmonic\, the Kyunggi Philharmonic\, and the South Bohemian Orchestra. \nMs. Lim has won many prizes at major competitions\, including First Prize at the International Competition for Violin\, Kloster Schöntal; Second Prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians; Third Prize at the Yehudi Menuhin International Competition for Young Violinists; and Fourth Prize at the Seoul International Music Competition. She has collaborated with such artists as cellist Gary Hoffman\, Philadelphia Orchestra Principal Bass Harold Robinson\, and French horn player Richard King. She has also participated in many well-known summer festivals including the Marlboro Music Festival\, the Ravinia Festival\, the Verbier Festival Academy\, Music from Angel Fire\, and the Aspen Music Festival. \nJoseph Tayoun: \nJoseph Tayoun\, a second generation Lebanese American\, is an accomplished Middle Eastern percussionist. He started playing by the early age of eight at his family’s renowned Middle East Restaurant in Philadelphia where live\, authentic Arabic\, Turkish\, Persian\, Armenian\, Greek and Israeli music and dance were performed nightly for over forty years. Learning from the area’s top Middle Eastern musicians\, Joe became adept at the many styles of drumming within these different ethnicities. \nHe performs with various Middle Eastern and World Music ensembles locally\, regionally\, and internationally\, as well as conducting workshops and master classes at schools and universities.  Joseph has been the recipient of several noteworthy grants from such organizations including the: NEA\, PCA\, PAEP\, and the State Department.  He is currently active in a wide variety of projects both as a performer and a educator. \n\n\nUdi Bar-David:\n\n\nUdi  Bar-David is widely considered one of the most versatile cellists in the world\, performing on international stages with both classical and ethnic musicians. Scheffer performed at Carnegie Hall and the Jazz Standard in NYC\, Kimmel Centerin Philadelphia\, Revoice Festival in London\, MISA festival in China\, San Sebastian Jazz Festivalin Spain\, Kennedy Center Millennium Stage in Washington DC\, Chicago Cultural Center\,Virginia Arts Festival and manyother premier stages. \nNathalie Handal \n\n\n\nNathalie Handal is the author of seven collections of poetry\, eight plays\, editor of two anthologies and her nonfiction pieces have appeared in Vanity Fair\, Guernica Magazine\, The Guardian\, The New York Times\, The Nation\, The Irish Times\, among others. Claire Messud writes\, “A contemporary Orpheus\, she hymns our most urgent and ineffable truths.” Her most recent recent books include Life in a Country Album (2019) of which Tracy K. Smith writes\, “the desire and longing running through these poems reaches me via the collection’s many voices and cityscapes\, and—most poignantly—via the borders between bodies\, nations and hearts”; the flash collection The Republics\, lauded as “one of the most inventive books by one of today’s most diverse writers” and winner of the Virginia Faulkner Award for Excellence in Writing and the Arab American Book Award; the critically acclaimed Poet in Andalucía; and Love and Strange Horses\, winner of the Gold Medal Independent Publisher Book Award\, which The New York Times said is “a book that trembles with belonging (and longing).” She is a Lannan Foundation Fellow\, Pen International Croatia Fellow\, Centro Andaluz de las Letras Fellow\, Fondazione di Venezia Fellow\, winner of the Alejo Zuloaga Order in Literature\, the PEN Oakland Josephine Miles Book Award\, among other honors. She is a professor at Columbia University and writes the literary travel column “The City and the Writer” for World Without Borders. \nZafer Tawil \n\n\n\n\n\nJerusalem-born Tawil is an accomplished Palestinian musician whose areas of expertise include the oud\, violin\, qanun\, and Arab percussion. Zafer performs across the US and in the Middle East and holds workshops in oud technique and Arabic music theory. He was part of the Spirit of Fez U.S. Tour 2006 and has performed with some of the most celebrated world music artists\, including violinist and oud master Simon Shaheen and Rai singer Cheb Mami. Zafer is continuously exploring the boundaries of Arab music\, and has worked collaboratively on many concerts involving classical Indian and Persian music\, as well as Jazz fusion. You can catch Zafer playing one of his many instruments at extravagant private celebrations near his Brooklyn neighborhood\, and at cultural centers such as Alwan for the Arts in Manhattan. \n\n\n\n\n\nFouad Dakwar \nFouad Dakwar is a singer/songwriter based in New York City. Self-produced\, his distinct lyrical pop-rock sound is his preferred medium for storytelling and revolution. Along with releasing two EPs and a full- length album\, he has written almost ten musical theater pieces and composed music for six plays. \nShira Samuels-Shragg \nShira Samuels-Shragg is a senior at Swarthmore College\, where she is majoring in music\nwith a focus on conducting\, and minoring in German. As a pianist\, Shira has performed as a soloist and toured as a chamber musician with Junior Chamber Music of Los Angeles and Young Musicians Foundation. She currently studies piano with Marcantonio Barone\, and is the pianist of the Three Twin Trio\, which has performed music ranging from works by Brahms to Arensky to Turina. As a conductor\, Shira was selected to be one of two inaugural conducting apprentices with Carnegie Hall’s National Youth Orchestra of the USA. At Swarthmore\, Shira is the conductor of the Lab Orchestra and assistant conductor of the Swarthmore College Orchestra. Highlights from her past projects include conducting Philadelphia Orchestra Concertmaster\, David Kim\, as soloist with the Lab Orchestra and music directing the Theater Department’s production of 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. ARTolerance will be featuring the award winning Arab & Jewish ensemble SheshBesh\, under the auspices of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra\, joined by cellist Udi Bar-David. The program will also recognize ARTolerance’s sponsors and upcoming initiatives of exciting and diverse programming in our region. Performance will begin at 3pm and guests are then invited to join a Meet & Mingle reception with the performing artists. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n3pm performance followed by a Meet & Mingle Reception\nSuggested Donation $20 at the door \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSheshBesh \n‘SheshBesh” a musical ensemble\, was founded by Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in 1999 as one of the first activities of the education department. This excellent ensemble brings together Jewish and Arab muscians in a unique example of tolerant\, understanding and communication. They appear regularly in the framework of education\, but have also appeared for adult audiences under Music Director\, Zubin Mehta.
